Dark mysteries you solve with yes/no questions

In What happened? you read a baffling situation in one to three sentences — then work out what really happened by asking yes/no questions. An AI game master knows the solution and answers every question you ask. Play solo, as a pair or with the whole group, on iPhone and Android.

AI game master

The AI knows the solution and replies with Yes, No, Partly, Irrelevant or “Not a yes/no question”. Type your questions or simply speak them.

Party mode, no internet needed

One person reads the solution silently while everyone else quizzes them. Group mode works with no internet and no AI — perfect for road trips, nights in and parties.

100 original stories

Four packs — Everyday Life, On the Move, Work and Leisure — across three difficulty levels. Every story comes with its own woodcut illustration.

A clear goal

Each story has key facts. Once you've guessed them all, the case is closed — no arguing about whether you were “close enough”.

Buy once, no subscription

12 stories are free. Packs are a one-time purchase at $2.99 each, or $7.99 for all of them, and packs you own keep growing with new cases.

How What happened? works

  1. Pick a story from one of the four packs and read the puzzling opening situation.
  2. Ask yes/no questions — typed or by voice.
  3. The AI game master answers with Yes, No, Partly, Irrelevant or “Not a yes/no question”.
  4. Guess all the key facts of the story — and the case is solved.

Try it out: two puzzles

Think about which questions you'd ask first — then open up the solution.

The Water Meter

The Water Meter

A woman in Hamburg glanced at her phone, went pale, and called the fire brigade in Munich. They broke down an apartment door there and found a dead man.

Show the solution

Her elderly father lived alone in Munich. To worry less, she had installed a smart water meter in his apartment and could track his usage in an app. Normally the curve showed his morning coffee, the toilet flush, the shower. For two days it had read exactly zero. She called the fire brigade at once, but her father had already died after a fall in the bathroom.

Half Past Two, Twice

Half Past Two, Twice

A bar's security camera shows Mr Brandt at the counter at exactly 2:30 a.m. At 2:30 a.m. that same night, 40 kilometres away, his business partner was shot dead. Brandt is convicted of murder anyway – and rightly so.

Show the solution

It was the night Germany switched from summer to winter time: at 3:00 a.m. the clocks went back to 2:00 a.m., so 2:30 a.m. happened twice. Brandt shot his partner during the first 2:30, used the hour he had gained to drive the 40 kilometres to the bar, and made a point of showing his face to the camera at the second 2:30. But his phone's cell-tower records, which are stored in universal time, showed he was at the crime scene for the first 2:30 and only reached the bar by the second – and the seemingly perfect alibi collapsed.
